HYOID est un groupe bruxellois de chanteur.se.s solistes de formation classique spécialisé.e.s en répertoire contemporain et performance transdisciplinaire. Le groupe, à géométrie variable, s’efforce de défier et d’élargir les formats de concerts traditionnels, tout en cultivant des partenariats étroits avec les compositeurs, interprètes et artistes de sa génération. Ils chantent a cappella ainsi qu’avec instruments, bande et/ou électronique. HYOID (/ˈhaɪɔɪd /) tire son nom de l’os hyoïde, un os en forme de U qui aide à la diction, à la déglutition et à la respiration; le seul os flottant librement dans le corps humain.

Leurs performances récentes incluent des salles et des festivals tels que Manifeste au 104 (Paris), Muziekcentrum de Bijloke (Gand), November Music (Den Bosch, NL), HCMF (Huddersfield, UK), Transit festival (Leuven) ou le GAIDA festival (Lituanie). HYOID a reçu les éloges de la critique pour A History of the Voice de la compositrice irlandaise Jennifer Walshe, créée au Transit (Festival 20.21, Leuven, BE) en 2017, reprise en 2020 au GAIDA Festival (Vilnius, LT) et au Muziekcentrum De Bijloke. En 2018, HYOID se produit avec la compagnie Ontroerend Goed dans Loopstation à Vooruit (Gand) et au KVS / Klara Festival (Bruxelles).

En 2020, HYOID a été ensemble invité par l’Opera Vlaanderen pour A Symphony of Expectation, une performance mise en scène par Krystian Lada avec Sinfonia de Luciano Berio. HYOID a également créé newpolyphonies, une collaboration avec Myriam Van Imschoot, à de Bijloke (Gand), ainsi que GAME 245: “The Mirror Stage” de Bernhard Lang, en partenariat avec l’IRCAM, à Transit (Leuven). En 2021 HYOID tourne ses collaborations avec Jennifer Walshe, Myriam Van Imschoot et Bernhard Lang et vient de donner la première de Journal d’un usager de l’espace avec le chorégraphe Benjamin Vandewalle, le Centre Henri Pousseur et la compositrice Maija Hynninen.

​Entre autre projets pour 2022 et 2023, HYOID rechantera Sinfonia de Berio avec le Antwerp Symphony orchestra, montera A-Ronne de Berio avec une mise en scène de Joris Lacoste, créera WORK SONGS avec Halory Goerger et Christopher Trapani, et fin 2023, RELICS: deux nouveaux cycles de Mauro Lanza avec l’ensemble Spectra. GAME 245: “The Mirror Stage” sortira en 2022 sur le label KAIROS.

HYOID reçoit le soutien de la communauté flamande, IMPULS Neue Musik, et le Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung.
En septembre 2020, l’ensemble est devenu artiste en résidence au Muziekcentrum de Bijloke (Gand).

HYOID is a Brussels-based group of classically trained vocal soloists specialized in new music and transdisciplinary performance. The group strives to challenge and expand traditional concert formats, while cultivating close partnerships with composers, performers and artists of its generation. They perform a cappella as well as with instruments, tape or electronics, and adapt their line-up to each production. HYOID (/ˈhaɪɔɪd/) gets its name from the U-shaped hyoid-bone, a bone helping with diction, swallowing and breating; the only free-floating bone in the human body.

Recent performances include venues and festivals such as the Manifeste festival opening at the 104 (Paris), De Bijloke (Gent), November Music (Den Bosch, NL), HCMF (Huddersfield, UK), Transit festival at STUK (Leuven) and GAIDA festival in Vilnius (Lithuania). In 2017, HYOID received critical acclaim for ‘A History of the Voice’ by Irish composer Jennifer Walshe, premiered at Transit (Festival 20·21, Leuven, BE). The following year, HYOID performed in theatre group Ontroerend Goed’s ’Loopstation’ at Vooruit (Gent) and at KVS/Klara Festival (Brussels).

In 2020, HYOID was invited by Opera Vlaanderen to perform Luciano Berio’s Sinfonia in the frame of the production A Symphony of Expectation, a performance directed by Krystian Lada. The same year, HYOID also premiered newpolyphonies, a collaboration with Myriam Van Imschoot, at Muziekcentrum De Bijloke (Ghent), as well as GAME 245 “The Mirror Stage” by Bernhard Lang, in partnership with IRCAM, at Transit festival (Leuven).

In 2021, HYOID premiered Journal d’un usager de l’espace, based on George Perec’s Espèces d’espaces, with choreographer Benjamin Vandewalle, Centre Henri Pousseur and composer Maija Hynninen at Kaaithater in Brussels. In parallel, HYOID continues touring its collaborations with Jennifer Walshe, Myriam Van Imschoot and Bernhard Lang.

In the 2022-2023 season and beyond, HYOID will again perform Berio’s Sinfonia, this time with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, and premiere a new performance built around Berio’s A-Ronne with Filip Rathé, directed by Joris Lacoste. The following seasons will, among other things, include a collaboration with Halory Goerger as well as two new cycles by Mauro Lanza, again with Filip Rathé and his ensemble, Spectra.

The ensemble has received grants and support from IMPULS Neue Musik, Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung and the Flemish government. From the season 20/21, HYOID is artist-in-residence at De Bijloke, Gent.
